Yellow Eared Ognorhynchus icteritis

 

Description: Plumage is dark green above, greenish yellow below. The forehead, lores and cheeks are yellow. The under wing coverts are pale greenish yellow on the under side and the primaries are greyish yellow on the under side and pale yellow on the inner edge of the upper surface. The under side of the tail is pale maroon with a pronounced sheen. Bill is black and powerful with a sharp, narrow tip. The iris is reddish brown and the naked skin surrounding the eye is black. Length is 16" and weight is 285 g (10 oz).

Range: It' s original range was the Andes of Columbia and northern Ecuador; in the sub tropic and temperate zone. It is found in areas where there are wax palms. However, since the early 1900's when it was plentiful, it has steadily declined and today is found in one small area of Columbia, the Munchique / Madalena Valley where 82 Yellow-eared conures are located. There are no known birds in captivity.

It is considered critically endangered and is listed in Appendix I of CITES.
