Brown Throated Aratinga pertinax

 

According to Thomas Arndt there are fourteen different sub species of the Brown Throat Conure. As each of these conures is found in a different locale, from different islands to the main land of South America, each sub species will be discussed individually. Many sub species were imported into the US originally and breeders did not r cognize the different sub species. Therefore you will see many birds here in the US that are a mixture of the sub species and not a pure representative of the individual sub species.

Aratinga pertinax pertinax are found on the islands of Curaco, St. Thomas and possibly St. Croix. The plumage is green with the throat, forehead, and the sides of the head a yellowish orange. The bluish crown extends to a neck and upper breast of light olive- brown. The coverts under the wing are a yellowish green with the outer web of the primaries being green and tipped with blue. The under side of the tail and flight feathers are olive-yellow. Eye ring is whitish, iris yellow and the beak a grayish black. Length is 25cm.

A. p. xanthogenia are found on the island of Bonaire. Similar to the Nominate form, but the yellow orange extends from the forehead to the forecrown. There maybe be some yellow feathers on the neck. Length is 25 cm. Arndt states there is some question as to whether this sub species is really different from the nominate.

A. p. aeruginosa are found in northern Columbia eastward to the Caribbean coast to northwestern Venezuela. Its plumage is mostly green with a yellowish forehead and brown cheeks. The neck and breast are olive-brown. The eye ring has very narrow yellow feathers and the iris is yellow. The Blue-green crown reaches almost to the nape. Cheeks and ear coverts are yellow with a brown edge. The abdomen has an orange tinge and the beak is blackish gray. Length, 24 cm.

A. p. arubenis are found on the island of Aruba. It is similar to the aeruginosa, but the eye and the area beneath it are yellow- orange with a paler yellow forehead. The sides of the head are brown with scatter pale yellow feathers. The crown is bluish with ear coverts that yellow feathers with brown edges. The throat and upper breast appear brownish yellow in color. Length, 25 cm

A. p. Lehmanni is found in eastern Columbia following rivers into Venezuela. Like aeruginosa, but the yellow-orange eye feathering is broader. The fore crown is blue- green and the throat is brown. The flight and tail feathers show less blue. Length, 24 cm.

A. p. tortugenis the largest brown throat, is found on the island of Tortuga. Like aeruginosa, but the sides of head are more orange, fading into the brown of the cheeks, and only faintly visible on the throat. The crown has very little or no blue. The under wing coverts are a light greenish-yellow. Length, 26 cm.

A. p. griseipecta is found in northeastern Columbia along the valley of the Sinu River. Like aeruginosa, the crown has little or no blue, the ear coverts lack the yellowish shaft. The upper breast, throat and cheeks are an olive-gray. Length, 24 cm.

A. p. margaritensis is found in the islands of Margarita and Los Frailes, It has a whitish forehead with olive-brown lores cheeks and ear coverts. The eye ring feathers are yellow-orange and is wider underneath the eye. The fore crown is bluish; neck and upper breast are a pale olive. The abdomen does not have much orange coloring. They iris is yellow and the beak is blackish gray. Length, 25 cm.

A. p. venezuela is found in all but the extreme northwest part of Venezuela. It has a whitish forehead with a bluish fore crown. Eyes have a yellow-orange feathering that extends downwarrd. The ear coverts, cheeks and lores are a dull brown. The throat and upper breast is olive-brown. Minimal if any orange feathers on the belly. The tail feathers have a yellowish tinge to the edges of the inner web. The iris is yellow and the beak is blackish gray. Length, 24 cm.

A. p. chrysophrys are found in northern Brazil, Guyana and southeastern Venezuela. Like margaritensis, but the cheeks are brown and the forehead a brownish yellow. The Flight feathers blue coloring is less noticeable. Length, 24-25 cm.

A. p. surinama are found on the coast of Guyana, Surinam and French Guyana. Like chrysophrys, but the yellow orange of the eye is more extensive covering the front part of the cheeks, lores and down to the lower mandible. It as a yellow white "faded" frontal band. The throat and breast are yellowish brown to pale yellowish green. Its belly is very yellow. Length, 24 cm. It is very rare and few were imported.

A .p. chrysogenys is found in northwestern Brazil along the Negro River. Its plumage is mainly dark-green with and abdomen that is dark orange. Breast, throat, sides of head and forehead are dark brown. Iris is yellow and beak blackish. The outer webs of the flight feathers are dark blue.

A. a. paraensis is found in northern Brazil along the Tapajos and Cururu Rivers. Crown and forehead are blue-green. The eye region is yellow-orange, ear coverts and above the eye is dark brown. Breast, throat and cheeks are brown. The belly is dark orange. The nape is dark green with brownish yellow feather edges. Thighs and under- tail coverts are green. The webs of the flight feathers are dark blue. Iris is red and the beak is blackish.

A .a. ocularis is found in western Panama. The crown and forehead are green and sometimes has a little blue coloring. It has dull brown lores, throat and upper breast. The ear coverts are a darker brown. A stripe of yellow- orange feathers is below and behind the eye, can have a few scatter feathers above the eye also. The belly is subdued yellowish orange. The iris is yellow and the beak a blackish gray. Length, 24 cm.
